January 17th may be the worst day of Rachel Griffin’s life so far. On this day, she goes to visit her father at his office in London, only to have him misunderstand everything she says.
And when she tries to explain…magic removes what she has just said from his memory. So that she cannot explain herself even if she wished to.
Worse, he misunderstands her and thinks that the Raven, Rachel’s favorite person in the world, harmed her. He damages the world to call up the Raven…leading to the loss of his own memory.
When Rachel, terrified, throws herself at the Raven’s mercy, her father thinks she is merely preferring “the monster” to him. This was misinterpreted by everyone and continues to haunt her for years to come.
Worse, when she got back, she showed her boyfriend what happened by letting him see her memory, and he saw her father’s expression, caught by the corner of Rachel’s eye, even though she did not notice it herself. So he sided with her father in this matter, leading to the first time the two of them did not see eye to eye.
Finally, the mysterious Master of the World came into her room that night and forced the Raven, his servant, to give her a set of fake memories. The fake ones did not replace her real ones, but for the next few weeks, she was afraid to speak or to refer to her real memories, which so upset her that she did not eat and lost some of the little weight she had.
Overall, really not her best day.
